Officer Michael Slager charged with murder after police study video of incident in which he appears to shoot Walter Scott repeatedly in the back after the motorist was pulled over for a broken tail light

A white police officer has been charged with the murder of an unarmed black motorist in North Charleston, South Carolina, after a routine traffic stop.

The decision to charge Michael Slager came after police studied a video of the incident in which Walter Scott, a father of four, was shot.

Lawyers acting for Officer Slager, 33, said he feared for his life after Mr Scott took his stun gun during a scuffle.

From the footage it appears that Mr Scott was shot eight times in the back as he fled.

The officer then approaches Mr Scott who, by then is lying on the ground, and handcuffs him.

After that he walks back to the spot from which he opened fire before returning and dropping an object next to Mr Scott.
